D-(+)-Melezitose . monohydrate
D-Melezitose is a nonreducing trisaccharide sugar that is produced by many plant sap eating insects. This is beneficial to the insects as it reduces the stress of osmosis by reducing their own water potential. It is a zwitterionic building block for synthesis. It can be partially hydrolyzed to glucose and turanose, the latter of which is an isomer of sucrose and is a alpha-glucosidase substrate. D-Melezitose can be used to identify clinical isolates of indole-positive and indole-negative Klebsiella spp. D-Melezitose is tested as a pharmaceutical excipient (e.g. to potentially prevent dehydration of insulin), has been shown to have cryoprotective effects, and palmitoyl and stearoyl monoesters of melezitose can be very promising surfactants for solubilizing drugs in parenteral formulations.
