Lipocalin-2 (human) (rec.) (His)
Lipocalin-2 is an iron-trafficking protein involved in multiple processes such as apoptosis, innate immunity and renal development. The binding bacterial siderophores is important in the innate immune response to bacterial infection. Upon encountering invading bacteria the toll-like receptors on immune cells stimulate the synthesis and secretion of LCN2. Secreted LCN2 then limits bacterial growth by sequestering iron-containing siderophores. LCN2 is expressed in neutrophils and in low levels in the kidney, prostate and epithelia of the respiratory and alimentary tracts. It is used as a biomarker of kidney injury.
